United Canadian American States
UCAS is very much a country and product of the times. Many argue that the events that unfolded – the native American revolution, VITAS, the great tech crash – are products of the corporate greed and malfeasance that the old United States helped pioneer.
The corporate resource rush into the national and native reservations, combined with the Native Relocation act led to the massive rebellion and war with the Native people during the Awakening. The eventual signing of the Treaty of Denver signed over significant lands in North America to the Native American Nations – splitting the continent nearly in half.
With the loss of substantial natural resources and severely in debt from wars and management issues. Lets remember folks, the four time president refused to believe in NAN magic, even when storms struck bases... in the middle of the desert... a dozen times. Management issues is an understatement. What remained of Canada and the United States merged into the United Canadian and American States little over a decade later.
With the sudden changes to the government – perceived kowtowing to the Native Americans in particular and the dilution of the southern power base with the addition of the Canadian states. The southern portion of the country seceded, as well as outlying areas such as Hawaii and California. The Secession Fever put the final holes in the modern national “quilt”.
Events savaging the modern world (VITAS, the matrix crash) struck the former US just as hard. The Night of Rage in 2039 signaled the start of the modern age of urban violence in the UCAS. From racist groups like Alamos 20k and Sons of Sauron to ideological movements like Hammer of God. To the many, many 'independent non-entities' (ala Shadowrunners) who take advantage of these same acts for their own purposes.
Today the UCAS consists of 30 states and two special administrative districts (the Seattle Metroplex and the Federal District of Columbia). Some metroplex areas are virtually independent jurisdictions, but remain nominally part of their state, electing members to Congress and voting in Presidential elections on that basis. The UCAS has held no territory outside the North American continent since the secession of Hawaii.
It does still have one of the largest standing military's of any government in the world (Megacorps excluded) and a growing economy. But the shining state has just as deep shadows to run in.
